Smartie’s View
SmartPak’s Retail Store from the pony perspective
By Smartie, the SmartPak Shetland Mascot
When you’re only 7.1 hands high, you see things most people miss. My name is Smartie – I’m the pinto Shetland pony standing guard at the entrance of the SmartPak Retail Store in Natick, MA. I’ve had my share of hugs and kisses from cute little kids who try to lead me around (I’m a bit stiff, so I don’t move much.) I’ve been dressed up in dog coats and WebKinz, and been groomed by every brush and curry we carry in the store. I love to let kids ride me, but I groan when the store manager walks over to demonstrate how sturdy I am – she is way too big to be sitting on my back!
I like to think I’m a useful member of the store staff. Dr Lydia Gray has used me to illustrate conformation points during the Get Smart lectures, and pony clubbers have practiced wrapping polos on my legs. I’ve even demonstrated that new Ice Horse Continuous Flow cold hosing machine. You’d think for all that work they’d give me a few treats now and again. But no, I have to be content with a few pats on the head.
It can be dangerous watching the front door. We have a lot of canine visitors, and they sometimes growl at me. I’ve even been attacked once or twice! I never worry about the short dogs, but when they are taller than me I get a little nervous. Luckily, the store associates keep an eye out for trouble. I’ve made a lot of four footed friends and enjoy a friendly lick to the muzzle, but I’d wish they’d stop sniffing under my tail!
I have a brother, Martie, who lives over by the fitting room. He entertains the kids when their Moms are trying on clothes. We look a lot alike, but I’m older, and definitely smarter. We are not related to that Butterscotch pony – what an upstart. Just because he moves around a little, everyone raves about him.
Please stop to say hi next time you visit the store. My right ear is always itchy, and I love kisses on my nose. Try to sneak in a treat if you can – the store employees say I look like a Thelwell pony and don’t need any treats, but I don’t see the problem. I guess I’ll have to listen in when Dr. Gray lectures about easy keepers in March!
See you at the store,
Smartie
Store Manager’s Note – Smartie and Martie are available for sale. Both are easy keepers, load easily and are kid safe. Plus – no vet or farrier bills!
